7 Inflatable Event Tent Specs Buyers Often Get Wrong

Do not compare inflatable tent specifications by the number alone.
A higher wind rating, heavier fabric, lower quoted weight or shorter setup time may look better on a supplier quotation. But those figures are not directly comparable if the definitions, test conditions or included items are different.
This guide looks at seven specifications buyers often compare on the wrong basis: wind rating, fabric denier, waterproofing, weight, setup time, airtightness and tent size.
The useful question is not simply, “Which number is better?”
It is:
What does this number actually measure, and under what conditions?
1. Comparing Wind Ratings Without Checking the Conditions
Do not compare two wind ratings until you know how each tent was anchored and configured.
Supplier A says Force 7.
Supplier B says Force 6.
That does not automatically mean Supplier A has the stronger tent.
A wind figure only becomes useful when you know the conditions behind it. For an inflatable event tent, that includes the anchoring method, ground conditions, whether guy ropes were used, whether sidewalls were installed and how exposed the site was.
Sidewalls are especially important because they increase the surface area exposed to crosswinds.
Ground conditions also change what is possible. Grass or compact soil may allow stakes to be used. A hard surface may require a different anchoring approach.
The UK Health and Safety Executive advises event planners to consider ground conditions at structural anchoring points, prevailing wind direction and wind loading when positioning temporary structures.
That is the right way to read a wind figure: as a figure tied to conditions, not as a standalone product score.
Based on previous MX project experience, correctly secured tents using guy ropes and stakes have remained in use in winds of approximately Force 7.
That is project experience, not a certified universal wind rating.
If a supplier gives you a wind figure without asking where the tent will be used or how it will be anchored, you still do not have enough information to make a fair comparison.

2. Assuming 600D Is Automatically Better Than 400D or 300D
Higher denier means a heavier fabric, but not automatically a better choice for every event.
Denier is a measure related to yarn linear density. Buyers often treat it as a simple quality ranking:
600D > 400D > 300D.
That is too simplistic.
For MX X Tents and Long Tents, the outer Oxford fabric can be produced in 300D, 400D or 600D.
600D is heavier and gives a more substantial finished feel. On a large tent, however, that extra material also adds shipping weight.
300D is lighter and more budget-friendly. Its finished appearance can still be suitable for many event projects.
MX commonly recommends 400D as a balanced option because it sits between the two in appearance, weight, cost and transport requirements.
But the correct choice still depends on the project.
When comparing fabrics, look at more than the D number:
- finished appearance
- hand feel
- print result
- opacity
- coating
- UV performance
- frequency of use
- shipping weight
- budget
This is important because denier does not tell you everything about outdoor performance.
For example, AATCC TM183 is a specific test method for measuring ultraviolet radiation transmitted or blocked by fabric. UV performance is therefore a separate tested property, not something that can be inferred from denier alone.
If you are comparing 400D with 600D, ask what the heavier fabric actually gives you—and what extra weight it adds to the shipment.

3. Comparing “Waterproof” Claims Without Asking What Was Tested
“Waterproof” is too broad to compare unless the fabric and test basis are clear.
Two suppliers can both write “waterproof Oxford fabric” and still be describing different material performance.
At MX, water performance depends on the fabric selected for the project. Different fabric options and surface treatments can produce different results, so one universal waterproof figure should not be assumed across every material choice.
Testing method matters as well.
AATCC TM22, for example, measures a fabric’s resistance to surface wetting using a controlled spray test. It does not measure every possible form of water penetration or every real-world weather condition.
So these two statements are not equal:
Waterproof Oxford fabric
and:
A defined fabric with a stated test result
The second gives the buyer something that can actually be evaluated.
Storage is a different question again.
Even when a fabric has good water resistance, MX recommends allowing the tent to dry fully before long-term storage. A fabric that performs well in rain is not automatically suitable for being folded and stored wet.
So do not compare:
waterproof vs waterproof
Compare:
selected fabric + treatment + relevant test result + storage requirements

4. Comparing Tent Weight Without Checking What Is Included
A 48 kg tent is not necessarily lighter than a 55 kg tent if the suppliers are weighing different things.
This is one of the easiest quotation numbers to misread.
Suppose:
Supplier A: 48 kg — tent body only
Supplier B: 55 kg — tent, ropes and stakes included
The first number is lower, but that does not tell you which delivered package is actually lighter.
With MX orders, ropes and stakes are standard items.
Sidewalls, pumps and storage cases are optional.
When a customer asks for an estimated shipping weight, MX normally looks at the tent size, quantity, selected accessories and previous packing data from the same or similar configurations.
That gives a more useful planning figure than one generic catalogue weight.
For procurement, separate these three ideas:
Tent body weight
the weight of the main tent itself.
Configured order weight
the tent plus the items selected for that project.
Estimated shipment weight
the expected weight of the packed shipment.
If freight cost matters, packed dimensions should also be checked. A relatively light shipment can still occupy significant volume.

5. Comparing Setup Time Without Defining What “Setup” Includes
Before comparing “5 minutes” with “8 minutes,” ask where the timer starts and stops.
A setup-time claim sounds precise, but the number can mean very different things.
Does the timer start when the tent is still packed?
Is the structure already unfolded?
Does the time stop once the frame is inflated?
Or does it include sidewalls, stakes, guy ropes and final positioning?
For MX tents, inflation time itself is relatively predictable.
Complete event-ready setup is more variable.
By event-ready setup, we mean the structure is inflated, positioned and anchored for use.
That process can include:
- unfolding
- inflation
- positioning
- installing sidewalls
- driving stakes
- attaching and tensioning guy ropes
- final adjustment
The people doing the work also matter. A team that has used the structure before will usually work faster than a first-time user.
This does not make setup-time figures useless.
It simply means the definition must be the same.
The useful question to ask is:
Does the quoted setup time mean inflation only, or a complete event-ready setup?

6. Treating Airtightness as “Pressure Never Changes”
A sealed-air tent can remain standing for a long period while gradually losing pressure and stiffness.
Sealed-air means the inflatable structure is inflated and then closed, without a blower running continuously.
Buyers sometimes hear that a sealed-air tent can remain inflated for weeks and interpret that as:
The internal pressure stays exactly the same for weeks.
That is not how it should be understood.
Based on MX operating experience, under relatively stable temperatures, a sealed-air tent can generally retain enough pressure to keep the structure standing for around a month.
That does not mean the pressure remains unchanged.
Over time, the inflatable legs gradually become softer. Structural stiffness reduces, and topping up the air restores the required support.
Temperature matters too.
If daytime and nighttime temperatures change significantly, the internal pressure can change even when there is no obvious leak.
So a claim such as:
Airtight for 30 days
is incomplete unless you know what the supplier means by “airtight” and under what conditions that figure applies.
A more useful question is:
How long does the structure normally retain enough pressure to remain properly supported, and when should it be topped up?

7. Treating a 5 × 5 m Tent as 25 m² of Clear Usable Space
A 5 × 5 m outer footprint does not equal 25 m² of clear usable interior space.
Footprint means the ground area occupied by the outside of the structure.
For MX inflatable tents, the stated nominal size refers approximately to the outer footprint.
The inflatable legs and frame occupy part of that area.
So a 5 × 5 m tent does not give you a completely unobstructed 25 m² interior.
This matters in two different ways.
An event agency wants to know whether the structure fits inside the allocated site boundary.
A brand team wants to know whether counters, displays, furniture and circulation will fit inside the tent.
Those are separate questions.
MX does not normally provide one fixed universal internal clear dimension for every project. Interior space is treated as an approximate planning figure because the frame and final configuration affect how the space can be used.
If two suppliers both quote 5 × 5 m, ask what that measurement actually refers to.

FAQ
Is 600D always better than 400D for an inflatable event tent?
No.
600D is heavier and usually gives a more substantial finished feel, but it also increases product weight and can affect freight cost.
MX commonly recommends 400D as a balanced option. 300D can also be suitable when budget and transport weight are more important.
The better choice depends on the project, not on the highest D number.
Can wind ratings from different inflatable tent suppliers be compared directly?
Not reliably unless the test or project conditions are also comparable.
Check how the tent was anchored, what ground conditions were involved, whether sidewalls were installed and what site conditions applied.
A higher number on its own does not prove better performance in every situation.
Does setup time include anchoring and sidewalls?
Not always.
Some suppliers may quote inflation time only. Others may include unfolding, sidewall installation, staking, guy ropes and final positioning.
Ask what the timer includes before comparing setup claims.
Does a sealed-air inflatable tent maintain exactly the same pressure for weeks?
No.
A sealed-air tent can remain standing for an extended period while pressure gradually decreases.
Based on MX operating experience, the structure can generally retain enough supporting pressure for around a month under relatively stable temperatures, but topping up may be needed as the frame becomes softer.
Does a 5 × 5 m inflatable tent provide 25 m² of clear usable space?
No.
For MX tents, 5 × 5 m refers approximately to the outer footprint.
The inflatable frame occupies part of that area, so the usable interior is smaller.
Does waterproof fabric mean the tent can be stored wet?
No.
Water performance during use and long-term storage are different issues.
MX recommends drying the tent fully before long-term storage.
Compare the Definition Before You Compare the Number
The biggest mistake in an inflatable event tent quotation is often not choosing the wrong number.
It is comparing numbers that were never defined in the same way.
A higher denier is not automatically the better fabric.
A higher wind figure is not automatically the stronger structure.
A lighter quoted weight is not automatically the lighter shipment.
A shorter setup time is not automatically a faster complete installation.
And a 5 × 5 m tent is not automatically 25 m² of usable interior space.
